When Acne is left untreated or we start to pick at them with our fingers, inflammation occurs and a scar can develop. Scarring is the skin's natural response to injury and healing and can cause small, shallow "wells" that heal quickly or when there is a loss of tissue, it can result in an indentation in the surface of the skin (what we commonly term "pitted" scars). Dark spots (i.e. post inflammatory pigmentation) can appear after a pimple resolves because the skin produces extra melanin when skin is doing its self-healing work.
Melanin is the substance that gives the skin colour. The overproduction of melanin in one spot or patch on the surface of the skin can cause it to appear tan, brown, or dark brown.
Treatment modes depend on the type and severity of scarring - the earlier we treat a scar, the more promising its results.
